Online life insurance searching: I’m Not Feeling Lucky
In Google, as in life, you won’t always be lucky. So when looking for online life insurance, you’ll get a better deal if you don’t just type “life insurance” into the text box and click the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button.

The more you shop around, the better the deal you’ll find. So making your online life insurance search as effective as possible is essential to find the best policy.
Online life insurance searching: start with the obvious
Google’s help page recommends people start with the obvious when searching for anything. So putting the phrase “life insurance” into the search engine (whichever one you choose) will get you started.
But if you can be more specific about the kind of life insurance policy you’re looking for, you’ll be more successful. “Life insurance over 55” will narrow down the online results.
Note that you don’t have to type “Life insurance for the over 55s” out in full – most search engines will discard common words like “for” and “the” because they slow down the search without adding much value.
Easy ways to improve your online life insurance searches
If you want such a word to be included – for example, the “of” in “whole of life insurance” – then put a space and a “+” in front of it: type “whole +of life insurance”.
Alternatively, you can conduct a phrase search, which looks for a full phrase. So if you’re online looking for nothing but a decreasing term assurance policy and you type the exact phrase bracketed by double quotation marks (or speech marks – ie, “”), the search engine will return in your results web pages which only contain that full phrase.
The minus (“-“) sign used in an online life insurance search will indicate that you don’t want to see results that contain the following word. So, for example, if you want life cover but don’t need it to pay off a mortgage, you could type “life cover –mortgage”, which will return web pages that contain the first two words but not the last.
Don’t leave online life insurance searching to luck
Remember that the one feature of Google that is unlikely to help your search is the “I’m feeling lucky” button. Searching for life insurance online is too important to leave to luck.
