Life insurance cover – what to look out for

Everyone has different circumstances – and what may be great life insurance cover for your next door neighbour may not suit you at all. But what are the factors you should look out for?

  • Flexibility – circumstances change for everyone, whether we like it or not. So it makes sense to have life insurance cover that can adapt to suit you. Therefore, when looking at your potential policy check to see if your can change the level of cover and whether or not your provider will charge you for this?
  • Grace period – if you miss a payment does your cover stop? Or are you given some leeway when it comes to missing the odd payment?
  • Are the premiums fixed? With some policies you or your provider can review the premiums after a length of time.
  • Exclusions – These could be critical depending on your lifestyle. Exclusion are basically when the policy will not pay out; this could be due to a number of factors, which can include: death due to alcohol or drug abuse, or taking part in a risky sport. So if you like to base-jump while blind drunk you may need to search for cover that is more comprehensive than usually offered.
  • Waiver of premium – some life insurance cover can include a safety net, so that should you come down with a long term illness and subsequently cannot work – your cover continues. This obviously costs extra to begin with.
