Life assurance comes in many disguises

Before in explain the difference between life assurance and life insurance I will list a number of the different terms providers may use when referring to life assurance:

  • Investment life insurance
  • Whole life insurance
  • Permanent life insurance
  • Life assurance or life insurance

Unless prefixed by the words ‘investment, whole or permanent’ as listed above – life insurance is a fixed term policy. I.e. it will pay out if the policy holder should die during a fixed period of time; usually 10, 15 or 20 years.

Life assurance is a policy which covers the eventual imminent death of the policy holder – i.e. it is insurance against something that will happen as opposed to something that might happen, (life insurance).

Because a payout is guaranteed with life assurance, (as death is an unfortunate inevitability) the premiums are usually much higher than a standard fixed term life insurance policy.

With life assurance it is possible to borrow against the policies value. But it’s important to be aware that these loans will cut the payout available to the policies beneficiaries should you fail to pay them back whilst alive.

As with a fixed term life insurance policy – the cost of a life assurance policy depends on a number of risk factors, these include:

  • Age – with older clients having to pay higher premiums
  • Occupation – an office worker is likely to have lower premiums than someone who spends their days fighting fires.
  • Health – if you have clean bill of health you will have lower premiums than someone with a multitude of health complaints
  • Lifestyle – smoking etc raises the cost of your premiums.
  • Gender – women are more likely to live longer than men, thus their life assurance will cost less.
  • Choosing life assurance cover
